Reliance Jio is India’s most popular telecom operator and 4G service provider. Initially, the speed of Jio 4G was pretty good but, as the number of subscribers increased the speed also started to decline. I wouldn’t call the Jio internet speed very slow for India but when compared to other countries it is definitely slow.
If you want to increase the speed of your Jio 4G internet, you’ll find tons of tricks on the internet that “claim” you could increase the speed up to 80 MBPS, 200 MBPS or “insert-a-random-number-here” MBPS. I’ll use all the tricks one by one and will let you know if they actually increase my internet speed.
I’ll use Ookla’s Android app (this is not the best way to measure speed but Ookla is widely known, that’s why I am using it) to check my normal internet speed and then I will check again after applying each of these “tricks”.
Let’s find out which of the tricks actually increase Jio 4G speed.
1. Changing the APN
Go to Settings > More (Wireless & Networks) > Mobile Networks > Jio SIM Tab > Access Point Names
Create a new APN, with the following values:
Name – JioNew
APN – jionet
Proxy – Not Set
Port – Not Set
Username – Not Set
Password – Not Set
Server – www.google.com
MMSC – Not Set
MMS proxy – Not Set
MMS port – Not Set
MCC – 405
MNC – 857, 863 or 874 (Any one of these)
APN Type – Default
Authentication type – Not Set
APN Protocol – IPv4/IPv6
Now save this APN and select it as default. If APN is not saved after clicking on “Save” then try again without changing the MNC value.
APN or Access Point Name, as defined by Wikipedia, is the name of gateway that connects your device to a network. Here, you are changing the APN to “jionet”.
Now reconnect to the internet. So did the Jio speed improve? New speedtest results: Download ~ 9 MBPS and Uploads ~ 15 MBPS
It didn’t make much difference; speed only slightly improved but that may have been just a normal fluctuation.
2. Changing the APN + Snap VPN
This method requires you to change the APN settings as shown in the above section and then download Snap VPN from Playstore.
After installing the VPN, select a different country and connect.
Did it work? New “speedtest” results: Download ~ 2.66 MBPS and Upload ~ 10.6 MBPS
No, it decreased the internet speed.
3. Only Snap VPN
“Download Snap VPN from Playstore and install it and choose a country from the free list.”
Does it work? No, this will not increase your speed. Using VPNs do not increase internet speed unless your ISP has throttled your bandwidth.
4. Changing the Frequency Band to increase 4G speed
All internet providers use different band frequencies to offer Internet connectivity; Airtel offers 4G internet using Band 40 while Vodafone uses the band 3 and Jio offers 4G on Band 3, 4 and 40.
It is claimed that –
- Best Speed: Band 40 > Band 3 > Band 5, and
- Best Coverage: Band 5 > Band 3 > Band 40
You smartphone automatically chooses that best band so changing or locking a band won’t make much difference.
First, make sure that Preferred network type is set to LTE. Go to Settings > SIM Cards and Mobile Networks > Select SIM Card > Preferred Network Type > Select LTE if not selected already.
Google how to change band for your model because it’s different for different models. If your device uses Qualcomm Snapdragon processor then you can use Shortcut Master Lite app.
However, I wouldn’t recommend locking the bandwidth as it is likely not going to improve the speed at all; it didn’t work for me. It might work in some areas though.
5. Using Internet Booster Apps
These apps improve internet connection by flushing the DNS, clearing the cache and optimizing TCP/IP and by pausing background processes so that your browser can enjoy the maximum speed. You can use any Internet booster app.
I checked my speed after installing and running a similar app and my speed test result showed the same speed as before so it didn’t make any difference.
6. Clearing Cache? No.
The internet booster apps I discussed above not only delete the cache but also flush DNS but they failed to improve the internet speed so I am not sure how deleting cache alone would increase the speed.
As you can see, almost none of these “tricks” actually worked and even if any of these tricks work, the improvement would be too small to even notice. You can still give them a try.
If you have recently recharged but are getting very slow speed, make sure you have selected the correct plan in “My Jio” app. If your speed is still very slow, call the Jio support. If you exceed your daily usage limit and internet speed drops, you cannot increase the speed with any “tricks”. The only thing you can do is wait for the next day or recharge again.
If you really want to improve Jio 4G internet speed, most you can do is to browse from an area where Jio has good speed and the network coverage is best (this won’t make much difference though). You could also try other 4G internet providers like Airtel and Vodafone.
